  • Appropriately setup assigned hemodialysis machines with using aseptic technique and test the machine prior to starting treatment to ensure patient safety.
  • Input prescriptions (treatment time, Potassium, Sodium, Bicarbonate, kT/V, machine temperature, and heparin) into the hemodialysis machine as ordered by nephrologist.
  • Greet patients and inquire about their last treatment and overall health. Should any complaints or abnormal findings arise, they are reported to a nurse.
  • Obtain patient's pre-weight, vital signs, and temperature.
  • Assess the patient's access to ensure no signs of infection are present.
  • Enter Ultrafiltration Goal that is suitable for the patient to remove fluid safely while meeting the 13 mL/kg/hr.
  • Cannulate patients and set blood flow rate to prescription.
  • Administer heparin bolus and infusion as prescribed.
  • Monitor patient’s blood pressure and report any abnormal signs/complaints that occur throughout the treatment.
  • Reinfuse patient’s blood from the external circuit and terminate treatment. Document patient's post-weight, blood pressure, temperature, dialysate flow rate, blood flow rate, kT/V, and blood volume processed.
  • Remove needles and apply appropriate dressing.
  • Disinfect patient area including all machinery and materials used after each treatment.
  • Perform CPR should the patients’ heart stop.
  • Prepare bicarbonate mixture throughout shift.
  • Disinfect the bicarbonate loop supplying each station in the clinic at the end of the night.

  • Obtain isolate(s) of bacteria to meet the appropriate McFarland Equivalence Standards to identify organisms and their susceptibility to antibiotics.
