Skills

Verify customer concerns, confirm the problem is there, fix and reverify the repair Get Customer name/phone-number, plastic seat cover the vehicle, write any damage around vehicle, mileage, VIN-number, license number, and error codes on instrument cluster

  • Engine Repair - Compression test - health of the engine - dry test fails, but passes wet test compression - bad piston rings, although both fail its the valves Rebuilt a V8 engine Used a timing light to adjust retarded/advanced timing
  • Electrical/ Electronics - Learned about electrons, Ohms Law (it takes one volt to push one amp through one ohm of resistance, Watts Law (PIE) Learned about circuits; battery source, switches, fuses, resistance (load and/or diameter/length of wire) The short to voltage and ground, high resistance (corrosion/dim/less power coming through), and voltage drop Learned how to use a multimeter/power probe Learned how to do a parasitic draw test (turn car off for 30 minutes, use an amp clamp on battery cable, if more than 50mA, check fuses for that same amp draw, find the source on the wiring diagram) Took apart an alternator, high pressure fuel pump, magnetic solenoid starter Find an open in a wiring of a vehicle with diagnostic testers, etc
  • Engine Performance - Used a pico scope to diagnose sensors Learned how the primary/secondary solenoids fire the spark plugs in a certain order on the graph Did valve lash adjustment from valve clicking, helps with fuel economy EGR testing - Did exhaust test that prints out a receipt of ppm, CO (carbon monoxide), CO2, and O2 Checked oxygen sensor for corrosion, used a pico scope to check upstream and downstream oxygen sensor Learned about DEF fluid and how it cleanses the diesel catalytic converters Used a smoke machine to find leaks Used a thermometer to check catalytic converter operation Used a CAN BUS tool to diagnose PCM
  • Automatic Transmissions/Transaxle - Learned the mechanics of an Automatic Transmission The Engine flywheels transmit the rotation to the Torque Converter, It goes to the trans oil pump, that goes through the valve body and shifts the clutch packs in the transmission There's planetary gears, solenoids shifters, clutch packs, 2-4 band, governor, and vehicle speed sensor Remove and Replace a automatic transmission on a 4wd suburban using a service manual and tools Removed and Replace a Front axle transmission on a Van Rebuilt a 4l60E transmission/ and a transaxle
  • Brakes - Flushed out the master cylinder, take it out of the vehicle and use a siphon to the primary/secondary plug ins to completely flush out while using a flat screwdriver to push the rod in and out to flush it Bleed/flushed the brake fluid starting far rear right, rear left, front right, front left, follow service manual procedure Changed the brake pads, and caliper Took out the wheel bearings, shake the tire top to bottom for end play It's okay if theres a little play on a rear wheel drive If it's front wheel drive, there is no endplay whatsoever Used a lathe machine and pro cut to lathe rotors and drums Took apart a drum and put it back together, checking the wheel cylinder for leaks Used a dial indicator to check for unleveled rotors, dial caliper for rotor thickness, check thickness of brake pads using red, yellow, green brake tool Understand why a brake pulls due to ruptured brake hose Slide pins due to uneven brake pads, pedal sinking to floor is air in system, pedal too hard, open vacuumed brake booster Etc
  • A/C and Heating - Understand how AC is bad to the environment, Obtained a license to handle R134a A/C systems Used a A/C refrigerant machine, pull all the refrigerant out of the high and low side, put in new refrigerant following from the engine compartment, the amount of oil and refrigerant required Learned how the A/C & Heating system operates Used a purple light to find leaks that are lime green in color Removed and Replaced the compressor, orifice tube, expansion/drier, evaporator, cabin air filter, and condenser, etc
  • Suspension/Steering - Took apart and inspect rack and pinion, tie rod ends Used the tire changer to change tires, and balancer to the wheels with weights Learned how to read the size of the tires (size in mm top to bottom, radial, size in inches for rims) Used the alignment machine Understand the order of rear caster and toe, front camber and front toe when doing wheel alignments Understand the direction of positive/negative caster, camber, and toe Bad bushings can cause death wobble and vibrations at higher speeds Removed and replaced macpherson struts, independent suspension, leaf springs, track rods, sway bar and stabilizer linkages Remove and replaced power steering pump and flushed power steering fluid using service manual
  • Manual Transmission - Learn about the operation of manual gear levels, and flush out a slave master cylinder
