When I worked as a Behavioral Technician, I worked with a client who had trouble listening to instructors and following directions. As I worked with the client I treated him as if he were my friend, talked about his special interests and listened to his stories and imagination. The more I let him speak his mind, the more he was willing to participate in school assignments and activities. Showing my client that I was there for him personally and not just academically made him feel seen and heard. Sometimes, we all just need someone to listen to us and show that we really do care. He successfully completed his coursework and was the first year he had the least amount of issues in his classroom.
