Transitioning from a utility clerk to a cashier was a big change, 2 different environments, but I was able to transition and learn the new position quickly with no problems. I consider myself outgoing and easygoing, so this helps me work in groups or ask for help if I have any questions. Working as a cashier during holiday times helped me work around fast paced environments, and still being able to effectively get my work done.

Cashier
Berkeley Bowl Marketplace
Berkeley, CA
11.2023 - Current
After 3 months of being a utility clerk, I transferred to the cashier position at my job. This position consists of checking customers out, and memorizing hundreds and hundreds of produce codes. We get one month of training, where in this one month we are required to take notes of every single produce item we have in the store, and write descriptions about them to help us identify them and help us memorize the codes. This position as a cashier strengthened my memorization skills.
As a cashier we are also multi tasking by bagging the customers groceries and also checking them out at the same time and try to be as efficient as possible.
We also have a cart filled with go backs from items that customers choose to not purchase and want to return, so our job also consists of taking those go backs and returning them to where they belong.
As cashiers we are also responsible for the cash in our drawers, so we have to be very aware of the change and money gave back to the customer, and make sure by the end of the night when we count our money, that we are not missing any money.
Our cashier check stands are also in pairs of 2, so I also work very well with other employees and assisting them in any way. If they need help finding any produce codes or doing a price check, I am always happy to help.
Utility Clerk
Berkeley Bowl Marketplace
Berkeley, CA
07.2023 - 10.2023
My job as a utility clerk required many tasks. One of my responsibilities was to make sure the front end of our store was nice and tidy, but that was a simple task. I also helped customers bag their groceries, and, if needed, I would help them out to the car with their groceries.
One of my main tasks was to collect shopping carts around our parking lot and bring them to the front of the store, so customers would be able to grab and use them. We would also get sent around nearby neighborhoods to collect shopping carts because some customers would take the carts up to their houses. We also did the same with hand baskets. They would be all over the front end store and we would have to collect them and place them right next to the door for customers to grab.
We also had a customer service desk where customers could go up and ask any questions or concerns they had about the store. I got trained to be at the customer service desk too because of my outgoing personality, and I was friendly with the customers.
If any other department of the store was short in staff, they would also send us utility clerks to go assist and help out in that department. For example, I've gotten sent to our bulk department as well as our beer/wine department to help out. I adapted to the environment quickly and helped out.
