After graduating fromUCLA with a degree in psychology, I started my teaching career as a substitute teacher of ESL and basic skills classes. I substituted at Menlo, Mid City and Evans adult schools. I was then given a regular assignment teaching ESL level 1B at Belmont adult school. I also taught a conversation class and a multi - level ESL class for some time. In all of the classes I taught, I tried to incorporate teaching methods and materials to meet students' varying needs. I modified lessons and curriculum to accommodate diverse learners by using strategies such as peer assisted learning and group work. I would also make sure to incorporate reading,,listening and kinesthetic activities to cover different learning styles. I would also shift between formal and informal methods of teaching to keep students engaged by using games, role play, visuals kinesthetic activities etc. At the end of class, I would evaluate students' understanding of course materials by giving verbal or written quizzes.
During my teaching career, I attended instructor oriented workshops. I was actually ask to give a workshop on the use of visuals. I also collaborated with a colleague to create lessons that incorporate the different learning styles And that take into account multi level classes.
Finally, I always reinforced positive behaviors with positive affirmation. In addition,beyond the learning objectives, I developed a rapport with students. I did this through empathetic listening and genuine interest in their lives outside of school. Just to add, I speak enough basic Spanish if needed in certain situations.
