At the Girl Scouts of Western Washington, me as well as 2 other group members in our troop pursued a silver award. It is one of the highest awards a girl scout can earn, and as a group, we chose an issue that we were all passionate about. Through late May until September 30th of 2024 we worked to meet with out supervisor and start preparing our project. The topic we chose was on nutrition and how to plant the seed of a healthy relationship with food in young children (3-5th graders). We created a powerpoint, survey, and gathered data. Then over the course of a few weeks, we distributed all the surveys to 2 schools, Eastside Christian School, and Basis. The data I gathered was to get an idea of what "a day of eats" was for a typical elementary student. We had 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders fill out a survey that asked if they get to help prepare meals in the kitchen, what they typically eat, and some of their favorite foods. Using all of these surveys, I manually tabulated the results and put it into an excel spreadsheet to create percentages and data points. We found that 4th grade was a target grade and we did a presentation on kitchen safety and nutrition to the 4th grades at Eastside Christian school. Lastly, we created a website, containing details about nutrition for youth athletes, as well as a fun interactive game, and more information on our topic. Throughout this project, we each had to achieve a minimum of 50 hours for the project. We submitted our final report and got it approved.
