Use knowledge about surgery and anesthesia to continually observe, monitor, and assess patient condition; maintains hemodynamic and neurologic stability.
Uses sophisticated, specialized and highly complex patient care equipment to include, cardiac monitors, transporting monitors, PCA's, Wound Vacs, and epidural pumps during the nursing care and management of the post operative patient.
Adept management of intravenous lines, arterial lines, airways, urinary catheters, surgical dressings, and drains.
Plans, develops, and implements individualized nursing care plans for surgical recovery patients of all age spans (neonate to geriatric) and all types of anesthesia (general, regional, local and/or sedation analgesia) based upon total patient assessment, and post anesthesia care nursing principles outlined by American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN).
Administers and monitors the use of therapeutic agents (medications) in accordance with the Department of Nursing and unit operating instructions, ASPAN and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
Skillfully intervenes and treats airway emergencies with various modalities dependent upon the situation (insertion, maintenance, and removal of oral and nasopharyngeal airways, administration of nebulizing racemic epinephrine, and positive pressure ventilations).
Provide complete and concise education for home care to patients and family prior to discharge from Phase II recovery.
Provide holistic patient care.
Monitors and maintains arterial and venous lines.
Management and administration of blood and blood products.
Provide complete and concise patient report, patient handout off, and complete charting/documentation of patient care via Genesis.
Interpretation of EKG, vital signs, lab values, and other patient care related data.
Recognize cardiac dysrhythmias and perform competently during life-threatening situations (ACLS, PALS, and BLS).
Utilizes critical thinking and independently makes decisions in the absence of a physician and implements proper emergency measures after identifying and interpreting life-threatening conditions.
Collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, fellow nurses, technicians and aid staff, identifying, analyzing, and recommending alternative solutions to issues when appropriate.
Ensures standards established by The Joint Commission (TJC), American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), Occupational Standard Health Association (OSHA), Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (AMMI), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) are adhered to.
Functions as charge nurse to the PACU.
Serves as chair person on the Unit Practice Counsel.
