I work in the cardiac/vascular outpatient cath lab and am responsible for knowing the patients' medical history, making them feel as comfortable as possible, sedating patients, administering dye allergy protocol, heparin, antihypertensives, narcotic reversal if needed, protamine, keeping contrast full, monitoring VS, setting up the med rad and documenting procedures, such as stents, PTA, atherectomy, IVUS, closure devices, etc. In addition, cath lab has to be stocked. I assist with pulling sheaths when needed and follow-up in recovery after duties in cath lab completed. After reviewing patients hx, I always give a time out to physicians and the techs prior to procedure. My training included admitting & discharging patients, before and after procedures which include rt & lt cardiac caths, vascular caths, aortagrams with run-offs & venograms. Since I am a retired RN from the federal government, I chose to only work 2 days per week. My position is very fast paced in getting the cath lab turned around, cleaned and set up for the next patient. A day can be 14 hrs, yet I am always able to keep up. I am also adept at admitting and discharging.
