An RN that is part of the medical team who attend to patients with critical conditions. Including assisting physicians, attending to patients and providing support to patients family, monitoring life support equipment, administer IVs and other medications and observe vital signs and reactions to procedures. Other duties include ensuring proper function of feeding tubes, ventilators,
catheters, etc. and attending to patients overall needs such as feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing changes, medication intake and comfort. Providing support, education and answering questions for the family is a vital role as well.

Administered an initial survey to the patient or family members in the Medical ICU regarding their satisfaction with communication with physicians and nursing. Following that was the implementation of a nurse (other than the bedside nurse) to be available for questions, concerns, support, and obtaining appropriate consults as needed. At the time of discharge from the MICU, the same survey was administered to the patient or family to see if the nurse communicator had helped to increase satisfaction with communication during the patients stay.
