  • Everyone in IVU coded procedures when I was hired as an IVU tech in 1990.
  • I really enjoyed this part of my job and I worked with our charge master analyst to update our IVU Charge Master annually.
  • I was the primary coder for the Interventional Radiology department beginning around 2010.
  • Once I was offered the IVU Lead job (2018), I was no longer the primary coder for IVU.
  • I still keep my coding membership up to date, and I do still offer guidance to the MDs and staff that I work with that struggle with some reports.

  • Perform complex imaging procedures, such as angiography, to diagnose and treat diseases.
  • We perform angioplasties, stent procedures, arterial and venous mechanical thrombectomies, intracranial thrombectomies as well as other intracranial therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, IVUS procedures, biliary and urinary procedures, TIPS, Y90, chemoembolizations and bland embolizations, etc.
  • Assist physicians in performing special procedures and biopsies.

  • Ensure radiation safety measures are followed at all times during imaging procedures.
  • Operate fluoroscopy machines for optimal image quality during exams.
  • Assist with the insertion of medical devices into vessels for therapeutic purposes.
  • Prepare sterile trays containing required instruments prior to each procedure.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues that arise during imaging sessions.
  • Maintain highest levels of quality, safety and patient confidentiality by following hospital and regulatory guidelines when collecting patient information and conducting imaging procedures.
  • As an IVU technologist, we always coded the procedures we performed.
