STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
It all started in 1989, I gave birth to my second child. I was a fisherman's wife, we had one son that was three years old. My second child was a beautiful baby girl
and we named her Christina. I remember when she was born and I was feeding her when I noticed she was beading with sweat on her forehead like a waxed car
looks when it is being rained on. I asked the nurse why she was sweating so much, she just replied "Does anyone in your family sweat a lot?" I told her that I wasn't
aware of that. I was ignorant, I had no medical knowledge. I respected the nurses professional opinion, she just blew it off like it was nothing to worry about. We
were discharged home the next day. I took her for her follow up appointment to a general practitioner that saw newborns and he said all was fine. I noticed she
wasn't thriving, still sweating, and coughing and took her in again. The doctor said she had head colds and allergies and just gave me decongestion, and allergy medicine. I then took her at a later date to get her immunizations at a public health clinic, (we were on medicaid) and they said she looked anemic. They would not give her the immunizations until I brought a letter from a physician saying she was not anemic. I decided to take her to a different doctor that took medicaid. This doctor tested her for anemia and told me she wasn't anemic. I told him that something was wrong with her, she is not gaining weight and she sweats a lot. He told me he couldn't find anything wrong with her but since I was so concerned to take her to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. During I travels, I kept seeing funeral signs on the side of the freeway that just stuck out at me. I didn't know it then but God was clearly sending me signs. I walked into the walk-in clinic, signed in and was first seen by a medical student, (it's a teaching hospital). He put his stethoscope to her heart and his eyes got so big I will never forget it. Faculty came rushing in to listen, and soon she was swished off for a echocardiogram. The cardiologist was doing the echocardiogram himself, and I was there with her. He seemed so excited as he said "she has ASD, VSD, and Transformation of the Great Vessels!" I replied, " Is she going to live?" He then apologized for sounding so excited but explained to me that they don't see this very often, and that they would do all they could to save her life. She had fluid in her lungs and around her heart and liver. From that point on I became a mentee, and the entire healthcare team were my mentors. After getting the fluid off of her with medications, they took her to surgery and did banding of the pulmonary artery. Wow, it was a lot to take in, my husband freaked out and left, he just didn't know how to handle it. She went on to have two other open heart surgeries to correct her heart. I was profoundly affected by the work that was performed on her, and hoe the entire healthcare team worked to save her life. From that day forward I prayed to God to save her life and that I would testify in his name everyday. I didn't know it then but soon would find out my testimony would come in the form of a nurse. I wanted to give back all that I had received. The compassion, the knowledge, the caring and warmth that I received during that time has never left me. I became a nurse and started on my journey to give back compassion, knowledge, caring and warmth to all my patients and their families. I truly feel that nursing is my calling, I am a compassionate Nurse Practitioner. I plan to work as long as I can, and then go on to be a Nurse Educator before I retire.
