In 2022, I began my full-time career as an EMT Basic crew member. After a year in the service, I was promoted to crew chief. This promotion gave me more of a leadership role as an emergency medical provider, and the ability to educate new EMTs starting out in Emergency Medical Services. I have competed in multiple competitions as well for Orangeburg County EMS. In 2023, I was awarded the EMT of the Year award by Orangeburg County EMS. I have participated in continuing education programs to stay current on best practices in EMS care. I have also completed the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course, and I am currently working to obtain National Registry Certification. I have been able to operate on multiple Mass Casualty Incidents and training scenarios. This gave me the opportunity to perform patient care, rescue operations, and triage patients while working alongside the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, the Orangeburg Office of Emergency Services, and the Orangeburg County Fire Departments.
In 2019, I joined Bolentown Fire Department as an explorer. During this time, I was able to learn basic firefighting operations. I was able to observe fire and rescue operations, and I began to learn how to safely operate at an emergency scene. I began taking classes to better my knowledge of fire suppression and rescue operations. I became an active firefighter with the department in 2021. I have been able to gain a lot of hands-on experience and work alongside OES on multiple accident scenes, rescue operations, HAZMAT incidents, and structure fires. In 2022, I joined the STAR team with OES and have been able to learn more in-depth about the equipment and operation procedures OES has in place. In 2023, I was promoted to the position of training officer for the fire department. This gave me the ability to further educate our new and current firefighters on fire suppression, auto extrication, open water scuba diving, and HAZMAT operations. I have also been able to sit in and assist at the Orangeburg Emergency Operations Center during severe weather events.
In 2024, I worked in the Emergency Communications Center for Orangeburg County. This was a temporary position, but it was very beneficial, as I was able to learn more in-depth about the day-to-day operations of emergency communications. I was able to take 911 calls and dispatch calls for Fire Departments and EMS. I was able to gain experience during this time on how severe weather event operations are handled in the Emergency Operations Center.
