At first, I became a referee mainly because I needed money. It seemed like a good way to earn some extra cash while staying involved in sports. I didn’t expect much from it other than getting paid, but once I started, I realized there was a lot more to the job than I thought. I had to stay focused the entire game and make sure everything was fair and followed the rules.
During games, I was responsible for making quick decisions, even when things got intense or people disagreed with my calls. It wasn’t always easy, especially when players or coaches got frustrated, but I learned how to stay calm and explain my decisions clearly. Over time, I got more confident in myself and better at handling pressure without getting overwhelmed.
I also had to manage player behavior and make sure everyone stayed respectful and safe. If there were arguments or problems, I stepped in and helped settle things before they got out of hand. I started to realize that I wasn’t just there to enforce rules I was helping create a positive environment where everyone could enjoy the game.
As time went on, I stopped thinking of the job as just a way to make money. I built friendships with other referees and got to know players and coaches too. I actually started looking forward to games because I enjoyed being part of the experience. In the end, being a referee became more about the people, the energy of the game, and the enjoyment of the job rather than just the paycheck.
