Core adjudication functionality is exposed as a web service using JAX-WS. As part of the engagement, legacy system developed in COBOL is migrated to Java keeping all interfaces, adjudication rules and client specific business rules intact. Migrated system adheres to the existing SLA. Design of the system was created with the multi-state support of POS engine taken as priority along with SLA. System interacts with three sources through which it receives a claim to be adjudicated along with Billing. POS adjudicate claims submitted in NCPDP 5.1 and NCPDP D.0 formats. The primary business function of the PBM POS System is to receive, adjudicate and pay pharmacy claims as per the Pricing. All these claims will be adjudicated as per the state policy and the Billing is complete during the adjudication itself.

Although there are several acceptable methods of controlling system access, WellPoint has chosen the Roles-Based method because it offers two advantages over other methods RBAC defines access privileges according to job role instead of individual identity, which makes the process of assigning access privileges simpler and quicker.
