Summary

Born and raised in Minnesota, I grew up on a farm in a once rural part of great Northern State. Health Care and Medicine were once things I feared growing up because for my family and I it was associated with the unknown. As I progressed through school I had various interactions with the healthcare field that should have deterred me though it rather made me strive to achieve my goal of becoming a physician. Now, when I see the looks of my Spanish-speaking pts in the hospital or clinic when I mutter "Buenos Dias!" I know this fear that I once shared has significantly abated. This too I see in the faces of my interns and medical students when I help clarify confusing subjects as well as congratulate them after pushing them out of their comfort zones!

Resident Physician, Internal Medicine

University of Minnesota, Internal Medicine
Minneapolis, MN
06.2022 - 05.2025

The University of Minnesota Internal Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME accredited program located in the diverse Metropolitan Area of Minnesota. The program itself boast three different hospital systems which include the University of Minnesota Medical Center (Public, Tertiary/Quaternary referral center, Transplant Center, Advanced-Heart Failure and ECMO center), Regions Hospital (Private, Non-for-profit, ACS Verified Level 1 Trauma Center, Burn Center), and Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Hosts Largest Research Program in the United States, one of four VAMC’s to serve polytrauma/traumatic brain injuries). Given the broad scope of hospital systems, I had the experience of managing the care of highly complex patients such as those with End-Stage Liver Failure, End-Stage Heart Failure (Impella, Balloon Pump, LVAD) and Transplant (Bone Marrow and Solid Organ). During my time in the program, I took part in multiple hospital ward rotations and specialties (Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, GI, ID, etc), often responsible for developing the daily plan of care, coordinating various specialties, disposition planning, and acute management in patients who were rapidly decompensating.

During my time in residency I was able to learn and improve upon many skills necessary to being what I believe to be an efficient and skilled internist such as:

  • Provided supervision during night shifts as senior resident, managing emergencies efficiently while maintaining the highest level of care for all patients on service.
  • Stayed current on advancements in internal medicine through regular participation in continuing medical education courses.
  • Developed strong rapport with patients'' families to facilitate informed decision-making regarding ongoing care options.
  • Conducted thorough physical examinations, accurately identifying symptoms and determining appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Streamlined patient admission process, reducing wait times and optimizing bed utilization.
  • Enhanced continuity of care by effectively coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Improved patient outcomes by implementing evidence-based practices in diagnosis and treatment plans.
  • Reduced hospital readmissions by developing personalized discharge plans and providing clear post-discharge instructions for patients.
  • Mentored junior residents and medical students in internal medicine best practices, fostering a supportive learning environment.
