Postal career spanned 25 years. Held the following titles during my time there: -
Automation Clerk - PS Level 6 Performed a variety of clerk duties required to process mail using automated mail processing equipment or manual methods of sortation and distribution. Operated Automated Mail sorting equipment such as the Delivery Bar Code Sorter machines, Used computer systems to input proper sortation schemes and operated OCRS (Optical Character Reader). Met time requirements and critical dispatch times so mail was prepared to be sent to individual stations from the Plant. Used established safe work methods, procedures and safety precautions. Position was Graveyard. I worked this position for over 10 years. -
Distribution Clerk - PS Level 5 Position was located at a smaller post office. Duties included setup of scheme for Distribution of parcels. Distribution of parcels and Carrier routed advertisement mail. (Cr-rt) Unloaded trucks full of cages of mail,Had to finish distribution of parcels so carriers were able to leave the station with mail and parcels for delivery by a specific critical dispatch time every morning. Failing to do so would cause our metrics and EXFC score to fall. held over a 98% EXFC score during my time at the station meaning 98 out of 100 days we met the critical dispatch time deadlines. Job duties also consisted of checking out and in keys, accountable letters and packages such as Certified and Registered mail to Letter Carriers. Customer Service duties included working the "Dutch" door customers with non-financial transactions such as ordering mailbox keys, and vacation holds etc. Manually sorted mail for Post Office box customers similar to how what a private mailroom would look like. -
CFS Clerk (Computerized Forwarding Systems) - PS-Level 4 Worked at a computer station keying customer information from letters that would pass by at a rate of 800-1000 per hour. Once information was typed in by employee the yellow forwarding label was affixed. Position within the postal service was eventually eliminated due to advancements of handwriting reading technology and improvements by the OCR machines which were able to forward the mail as it would be run through the automation equipment. -BMEU Clerk (Business Mail Entry Unit) - PS Level 7 Duties included Customer Service and helping business customers and Presort mailing companies to understand the work share discount, costs associated wit fees involved and proper preparation and sortation of mail so they could obtain a discount. Advertising mail which you see in your mail box marked Presorted Standard would consist of between 200 to 200,000 pieces of mail per mailing in which Customers would receive large discounts vs First class mail depending on the level of sortation the customer chooses to present the mail to the USPS. BMEU Clerk Duties also included Revenue Protection, inspecting Presort Standard mail to make sure it didn't include any material which would disqualify it from the lowest rates available as it then would have to be sent as first class mail at a higher rate. Revenue Protection also included verifying by weight and certifying mailings presented by customers and that the mailpiece counts were accurate within 1% of the claimed total to make sure that the USPS wasn't getting ripped off by a customer claiming for example 2000 pieces of mail but really had 2500... We were responsible for collecting the additional revenue and holding the mail so it did not enter the mailstream until the proper funds were received from the customer. Duties also included inspecting meter marks and making sure that the mail presented by business customers met all other automation standards so that the mail would run smoothly through the mail system. Responsible for answering phones and customer questions and knowing the DMM or Domestic mail manual from cover to cover. -
