Painting, drawing mandalas, sewing

I started painting in high school. I like to paint with watercolors and paint wooden signs with acrylic paints. Painting is a way to relax and refocus for me.

I taught myself to draw mandalas by watching videos. I have made more than 25 mandalas and they hang in my children's homes.

I embroider handkerchiefs for my daughter's weddings and pillowcases for my children's birthdays.

I painted a mural of an aquarium on a 10x20-foot room for a youth program at St. Thomas More School.

I painted a map of the United States on a tennis court using string to create a grid at St. Thomas School.

As a teacher, I created many bulletin boards using novel ideas and materials and started a small business selling bulletin board elements to other teachers.

Additional Information

  • Looking at my education, you will see that I was unsuccessful in my first 2 attempts at college. I was 17 when I went out of state for school and had a terrible experience with college. I even had a professor who acted inappropriately, so I left school. My 2nd attempt at UH was difficult for me because I had children at home ages 1-4 and no support to care for them, so I left.
  • I am 63 years old and my children are paying my tuition and books fees for HCC. They are giving back. This time in college I have exceptional professors at HCC and my desire to succeed is great. I am not a silly young girl, a mother with her hands full, I am a women that is reaching for the sky and enjoying every minute in class.
  • I am the mother of 6 exceptional children who I put through private schools. They worked very hard in school and all were given half or full scholarships to college. I was there supporting them through every achievement and upset. I helped them fulfill their dreams wherever it took them. They are my greatest adventures. Mother's Day is always special because they write me notes saying thank you for letting me be who I was meant to be, thank you for being strong and supportive, thank you for showing me unconditional love.
  • As a teacher, I was always drawn to the students who were more challenging or had different ways of learning. I was able to make connections with them and help them learn. I taught a 4-year-old child that refused to speak. He could speak but was afraid. After 2 months in my class and my constant talking to him, he felt safe enough to talk. My strong suit in teaching is helping those who need just a little more time and need to feel safe which builds their confidence.
  • As a tutor for HCC, I would bring my compassion, patience, and understanding to students who need a little help. I excel in Math and Science and I know that I can help explain complex problems in easier terms, and I can also act as a mentor giving support. So far, I have learned that the young people at HCC are thoughtful and kind towards me and each other. They look at me as a grandmother ready to cheer them on and be there for disappointments.
  • I have years of wisdom and experience to bring to the table. I would very much like to tutor students at HCC.
