I started as a tailor in the Philippines and then immigrated to Independence, Missouri in 1979 at age 19. I worked as a sewing machine operator at a garment factory in Kansas City until I changed job and was employed by the Technicraft Corporation. Since i have the skills to draw, measure, design, and fabricate anything made of fabric, i was promoted to be the prototype creator where I polished my sewing and fabrication skills. Since the sewing industry is starting to be outsourced to different countries (e.g. Mexico, Asia, etc) I decided to pursue an engineering degree. Working during the day and going to school at night. In my junior year, I quit full time work at Technicraft Corporation but they retained me, working during school breaks and summer until i graduated in 1989. While in college, I also worked in the theatre department, building sets and sewing period costumes that were used in performances. Throughout my life, I continue to sew and create: Halloween costumes for my children, seats for vintage Vespa Scooters, bridal gown alterations, prom dresses, and many sewing repairs for friends and families. Now that I am retired, I wanted to do the kind of work that was a big part of my life so when I saw the ad for the ad for this position, i immediately expressed interest. I am also willing to work full or part time, as needed.
