I've worked on websites with millions of uniques a month, internal web tools, backend systems, and data warehouses relying on cluster computing. As a full-stack engineer I have built security systems, parallelization frameworks, no-sql solutions, micro-services and a variety of frontend projects.

I'm a buck stops here engineer with a deep sense of ownership who loves fostering effective group think often using proposals to drive discussions, inviting collaboration through curiosity, and eagerly giving credit where due to encourage a meeting-of-minds culture.

  • Advocated new core architecture, driving a collaborative vision across many invested engineers.
  • Sped up core systems by 3x, allowing a more live recommendation of scooter deployments.
  • Kotlin, AWS, RDS - Postgres, SQS, EKS, Avro, REST, Redis, Datadog, PagerDuty, Git, Gradle/Bazel

Lead Software Engineer

Steelhouse
10.2017 - 04.2019

Architected and cooperatively built a new platform for Steelhouse's core business including a sensitive migration of users. Dynamic enough to house their various legacy models, scalable enough to grow orders of magnitude, it enables new capacities in automation.

  • Built decoupled, highly available, scalable, reliable and distributed applications (Amazon EKS, Instana, Scalyr, Wavefront).
  • Java, Spring, J2EE, Hibernate, Jackson, AWS SQS + SNS, AWS EC2, S3, byte-code manipulation, SQL, Postgres, GreenPlum, REST
  • Organized and held meetings with stakeholders, product team and customers throughout entire system development life cycle.
  • Through database analysis, became an authority on the legacy data model, especially where internal understanding had been lost.
  • Designed the data model and surrounding business logic core to the new platform.
  • Achieved complete in-memory test environment resulting in speedy code iteration (sub-minute) covering all use cases.
  • Cultivated a positive culture of code reviews (for knowledge transfer and feedback).
  • Recommended and executed plans to improve build tools and processes to realize continuous integration.
  • Monitored equipment functionality to verify optimal performance and make proactive adjustments to systems.
  • Pushed for and executed a multi-environment platform.

  • Coordinated deployments, testing and code corrections to produce high-quality final products.

Senior Software Engineer

TripAdvisor
02.2014 - 09.2017

TripAdvisor created our Analytics team inviting five engineers including myself to reinvent our BI platform. Our platform has since gained quick popularity around the company due to the way in which it empowers analysts and product managers to answer questions that just weren't possible before.

  • Java, Hive, Oozie, Redshift, Azkaban.
  • Built a data warehousing and analytics platform leveraging Hadoop/Hive, Amazon's Redshift and Tableau.
  • Automated a table deletion process to archive and drop unused data resulting in a 2.5x performance increase.
  • Led tool development for importing data and scheduling data aggregation jobs.
  • Led iterative, MVP, end-user driven solutions.  Developed products while working closely with end-users via requirements gathering and demos over short development cycles to ensure success.
  • Prototyping and investigating solutions
  • Architecting developer environments, frameworks, and processes
  • Managing our Redshift cluster
  • Worked on a Kafka cluster ingesting 1 billion events a day

Software Engineer II

Tripadvisor
02.2013 - 02.2014
  • Part of a small team who developed TripAdvisor's "Answers" frontend module.  This project was seen as a huge success that touched every major tier of the Tripadvisor.com infrastructure.
  • Implemented an intelligent batch and triggered emailing service designed to source answers to questions from our users by asking TripAdvisor members and hoteliers.

Senior Software Engineer

VirtualTourist.com
08.2010 - 02.2013
Senior software engineer specializing in website technologies from backend to front.
  • Led 7 developers on a major site rebuild over a period of 5 months.
  • Designed the security framework based on Apache Shiro, annotations, and a keep-your-data-safe re-login flow.
  • Collaboratively designed and developed many of Virtualtourist's key projects.
  • Implemented a modularization framework including parallelized data requests, partial page updates via Ajax, and loosely coupled views to the underlying REST-based data services.

Software Engineer

VirtualTourist.com
01.2008 - 08.2010
  • Developed the CSS and javascript build system empowering engineers to iterate on JS/CSS with a 0 second iteration time including automatic minification, obfuscation and many performance and load-time enhancements aimed at deferring as much javascript load and processing as possible.
  • Architected our CDN integration, caching and invalidation strategies.

Software Engineer

OneTime.com
05.2006 - 01.2008

Director of Technology

eValueZone.com, Inc
07.2004 - 03.2006

Education

Bachelor of Science - Physics & Applied Mathematics

University Of California, Riverside
Riverside, CA
2004

Skills

  • 20 years of Java (Gradle/Maven, Spring, Hibernate, Groovy/Grails, Git/SVN, J2EE, Apache/Jetty/Tomcat)
  • Expertise in distributed, highly available systems
  • Proficiency in constructing frameworks
  • SQL expert (Postgres, Redshift, GreenPlum, Hive)
  • Adept at reverse engineering systems and database schemas
  • Advanced *nix user

Accomplishments

  • Built out a highly efficient and effective team dedicated to customizing enterprise software solutions for Whipmedia's transactional CVM product meeting 268 deliveries to date across 27 film studios and media providers.
  • Developed the Steelhouse platform for synchronizing internal changes with external partner systems in realtime. Pub/sub, parallelized and reliable with a translation framework that allows minimal changes in a world of constantly evolving internal and external APIs and data models.
  • Drove the initial beta product for TripAdvisor's internal analytics tool including a multi-developer environment and a multi-tenant developer database environment. This product has since become our team's flagship UI used for a growing set of tools and concurrently worked on by multiple engineers.
  • Parallelization Framework: Designed and implemented a modularized parallelization framework for VirtualTourist.com to drive sub-second content load times through the site and optimize code reuse, module decoupling and partial page loads.
  • Created a data streaming process designed to accelerate internal database exports up to Amazon's S3. Data was fully compressed on S3 by the time it completed streaming out of our database with no slow down. This process automatically spins up compression and upload threads as needed to make use of extra CPU cores.
  • Security: Found a security hole in TripAdvisor's corporate use of LDAP where passwords were being sent in plain text in our company network during a packet sniffing deep-dive, and worked with IT to correct it.
