K-4 Teacher

Cathedral Christian School
08.2001 - 05.2002

Taught each child to read by teaching letter knowledge by naming and sounding of alphabet, then blends, in a fun singsong pattern. Later, words, sentences, phrases, paragraphs and book reading was taught, both individually and in small groups. Reading and writing were taught integrated.

I had 18 students both years and taught 15 out of 18 to read both years. The 3 that didn’t read had serious learning difficulties.

Taught math by learning numbers by number name and amount, then to writing numbers, and through hands on manipulation, as well as math games. The students were taught to count to hundreds by ones, twos, fives, and tens. The students were taught to add and subtract both on paper, with manipulation, and mental math, both individually and in groups.

The ABECA Program was used for reading, writing, and mathematics.

Several different centers were available for students to travel through, and were routinely changed to challenge learning and peer to peer relationships.

Play was an integral component of K4, and coloring, using scissors, and play dough were some of the hand strengthening techniques used.
