Working in a drug discovery lab using biochemistry and Molecular biology to combat antimalarial resistance
Practicing Biosafety and lab safety protocols as we use the DD2 strain of Plasmodium falciparum (Malaria parasite) and human blood to do experiments
Serial Passaging the DD2 stock on Red Blood Cells to compare growth and development with the culture containing drugs
Assays: Using both recrudescence and quiescent assays to witness growth of parasites after drugs are added to see if the parasites grow back
We also want to know if they're pyknotic (dead, condensed) or quiescent (still condensed, but temporarily stopping growth)- if there are no signs of parasites after 20 days, the parasites do not grow resistant to the drug compound used

Worked with Dr
David Hongo to study the impact of Parabens, an endocrine disruptive chemical, on kidney Cells using the COS-1 cell line (monkey Kidney Cells)
Infected the COS-1 cell line with methyl, butyl, and propyl parabens to witness cell growth and development
Used different concentrations (0.1mM, 1mM, and 10 mM) of the 3 types of parabens to see if toxicity of parabens were dose dependent
Calculated cell viability percentage by using the trypan blue staining method
CONCLUSION: Parabens were highly toxic to the COS-1 Kidney cells with higher concentrations of parabens
There was no significant difference when lower concentrations were used
