• I shadowed my family doctor at our clinic, local hospital, and several nursing homes over the summer. Here I gained a lot of medical experience. I gained knowledge in a few medical procedures such as a lumbar puncture, pap smears, IUD insertion, and draining several infection appendages. I was also introduced to medical scribing. Here I gained knowledge on placing information under the correct sections like history of present illness, social history, plan, past medical/surgical history. I learned how to order labs and which labs checked different organs and metabolic functions. I also learned different medications for certain illness. I gained patient communication experience. My doctor also taught me about the many anatomical structures that can be checked during a physical exam. He helped me locate the sacroiliac joint, L4 and L5, medial and ulnar neuropathy, crepitus in the knees, carpals and tarsals in the hands and feet, and the functions of different organ systems. My doctor also slightly introduced me to reading X-Ray scans and let me look under microscopes searching for bacteria.
