This job position allowed me provide aid during breeding sessions and collaborate with veterinarians to provide medicine and vaccinations for sick animals. I was required to wash and clean cattle udders, milk parlors and tanks during and after milking times. I always maintained high standards of animal welfare when performing feeding and milking procedures, along with other miscellaneous actions. Walked cows to parlor facilities while ensuring they had fresh bedding. I inspected and reported animal health and reported suspicious or unusual behavior when being in and around all ages of the herd. I also assisted with feeding, tagging and treating calves post-birth. I adhered to all department and facility standards to promote safety for all animals. Fed and watered livestock and monitored food and water supplies to ensure proper nutrition requirements were being met. Cleaned stalls, pens and equipment to make sure animals had clean areas to recover form illnesses and/or a sterile environment was maintained. Examined animals to detect illness, injury or disease and helped to administer medications and vaccinations or arranged for veterinarians to provide extensive treatment. Segregated animals according to weight, age and physical condition.
My job mainly included bottle feeding upwards of 300 baby calves per shift. I would work roughly 5 days a week for 5 hours at a time or more; working both early morning and late night shifts. Using an all-terrain vehicle with a tank and pump, I would transport milk from each barn and into the bottle carts. Then filled the the necessary amount of bottles in order to feed each calf. After ensuring all calves drank to the best of my ability and all needs were met I sanitized and deep cleaned all my equipment used in the process of feeding the calves. However this was the not the only job I preformed on this farm as I also helped out with other daily tasks. These included making sure all calves had grain, water, and fresh bedding, as well as power washing and deep cleaning the sides and backs of each calf crib. I often also contributed to the sweeping out and clearing of debris in most of the barns. I was very diligent in making sure that wherever help was needed I put my hand up and offered my assistant as well as made myself available to work any extra shifts for those who were unable to come in.
