State runner-up UIL OAP

Kempner High School is one of the most prestigious high school theatre programs in all of texas. Once I had arrived my junior year I couldn't help but join the program. I did a musical to start the year off, because I was new my role wasn't particularly large. However, that did not change how rigorous and unrelenting the program was. 5 rehearsals a week, 2 and a half hours after school Monday- Thursday, and 6 hour rehearsals on Saturday. We did this for about 2 months before having 3 different live performances. Next, was UIL OAP. UIL is the Texas organization that administers these contest. OAP or (One Act Play) was what we were competing in. Rehearsals started mid January and extended to late April, this time 6 days out of the week with weekday rehearsals being 3 hours a day, everyday afterschool. My role in the OAP was not on the stage but behind it, controlling what is called practical lights (lights that appear on stage as part of the set). For the first half of rehearsals however, I had to help build the set. So, I learned how to paint, how to sow, how to use different saws (Like a chop saw or jigsaw), how to use drills, and leadership skills as I helped lead and particularly small and not vocal group of technicians. All in all the experience left me drained in the best way possible. The process expected me to dedicate everything I was to it, and so I did, those rehearsals turned our group of 11 peers into a family. Our work paid off as we made it to the second to last round of the competition before narrowly being beaten out.
