• Provides pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency ambulance services at the advanced life support level to residents and visitors on Oahu.
• Oversees the operations of the unit on shifts not covered by the Unit Supervisor.
• Functions as the triage officer at the scene of mass casualty and establishes priority of treatment of
patients at the scene.
• Provides expert testimony, when subpoenaed, at medical panels and courts of law.
• Recognizes a medical emergency, obtains an accurate history, and performs a pertinent physical examination to assess illness or degree of injury.
• Initiates and continues appropriate invasive and non-invasive medical care for respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological/spinal cord, musculoskeletal, pediatric, burn, behavioral, shock, metabolic, poisoning, trauma, medical, obstetrical, gynecologic, and neonatal emergencies.
• Safely and accurately performs all advanced life support procedures as defined under the Board of Medical Examiners rules for emergency ambulance personnel.
• Supervises and participates in providing general emergency procedures such as providing the appropriate rescue and resuscitation procedures on near drowning, cardiac arrests, and electrocution patients.
• Controls hemorrhages and prevents shock, applies splints, treats, and dresses wounds resulting from amputations, lacerations, contusions, punctures, and abrasions.
• Transports patients onto the ambulance while continuing treatment and care enroute to the medical facility.
• Communicates data to the designated medical authority via the medical communication channel (MEDICOM) or telephone in cases of radio transmission failure.
• Consults with Base Station Physician on treatment needed and carries out further medical orders. • Exercises medical judgment on cases where immediate intervention is necessary to sustain life and
provides emergency care as authorized by approved standing orders.
• Performs extrication of patients when required, with approved immobilization and extrication techniques and tools to preserve life and minimize aggravation of injuries.
• Drives and/or accompanies emergency-ambulance vehicle in a safe and expeditious manner and with due consideration to patient’s medical status and departmental protocols.
• Prepares accurate and complete records of all medical cases on approved Ambulance Report Forms/Patient Care Reports.
• Supervises and maintains the cleanliness of ambulance stations, ambulance, offices, and surrounding areas.
• Restocks medical and other supplies in the ambulance as needed.
• Maintains accurate records and accountability for all narcotics and controlled drugs used on the
ambulance according to applicable laws and protocols.
• Attends and successfully completed continuing medical education sessions including BLS for Healthcare Providers, ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, EPC, and HAZMAT courses.
• Conducts lectures on pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency ambulance services to schools, community groups and others as directed.
