As a surgical technology student, I recognized the importance of gaining extensive hands-on experience during my clinical rotations. I made it a priority to actively seek out and participate in as many surgical cases as possible, knowing that each procedure presented a valuable opportunity to expand my knowledge and hone my skills. Throughout my clinical training, I worked to accumulate a diverse portfolio of 150+ surgical cases, encompassing a wide range of specialties and techniques. With each case, I approached the operating room with a sense of curiosity and commitment to learning. I carefully observed the actions of the surgeons and experienced surgical technologists, absorbing their techniques and best practices. I asked thoughtful questions when appropriate, seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in each procedure. My goal was to extract valuable lessons and insights from every single case, continuously building upon my foundation of knowledge. By immersing myself fully in the clinical experience and maintaining a proactive learning mindset, I strived to maximize my growth as a surgical technology student and lay the groundwork for a successful career in this dynamic field.
As a patient care liaison, my duties are to do most of the computer work (transfer patients, print labels, print wristbands, order anything that is needed, and scan their papers), communicate with the patients and their family members, make sure the floor is clean/organized, help the nurses by giving them or ordering anything that Is needed for them to help the patient. While doing those things, I ensure and offer as much help as needed. While working at OSF hospital, I was taught how to properly take care of the patients, be patient with them, pay attention to detail, and make sure the patient knows you care about them, have empathy for them, and are working/won't stop working until they are better and in a healthy state.
Throughout my surgical tech program, I achieved the significant accomplishment of participating in 150 surgical cases, gaining experience across a wide range of surgical specialties and procedures. With a mindset focused on continuous learning, I consistently approached each new case as an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills. This attitude enabled me to be one of the top-performing students in my program in terms of experience. I had the privilege of working alongside talented surgeons who entrusted me with increasing responsibilities in the operating room. Several doctors took notice of my technical abilities, attention to detail, and strong work ethic, complimenting me on my performance and contributions to the surgical team. By the end of the program, I had developed a diverse skill set that included proficiency in preparing operating rooms, maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the needs of surgeons, and providing optimal patient care before, during, and after a variety of surgical procedures. The extensive hands-on experience I gained, combined with the positive feedback received from the medical professionals I collaborated with, gave me great confidence in my capabilities as I entered my career as a qualified surgical technologist.
