Makol Chuol

I am presently engaged in teaching and tutoring 13 unaccompanied refugee children under my care. This ongoing commitment involves dedicating 8 hours per week to provide instruction in English and basic computer skills. Ensuring their educational needs are met, I am actively involved in helping them adapt to their new surroundings. This initiative is a continuous effort, reflecting my dedication to supporting and empowering these young learners who have arrived without accompanying guardians.

I will work on summer Project in SOuth sudan where I will be building a school with help of community using the grants to purchase materials. I anticipant this project to be fruitful and helpful in my studies and experience during this time away from college.

I am applying for the Davis for Peace project to secure a grant for building a school in South Sudan next summer (2024). My goal is to enhance education and create a positive impact in the community.

I am employed as a Technical Service Aide in a library, where my primary responsibilities revolve around managing the library's inventory. This includes tasks such as receiving and updating new books in the library system. Additionally, I am responsible for the removal of outdated or unnecessary items, such as old books and compact disks, through a process known as weeding. Another aspect of my role involves repairing damaged books, particularly those with rips. Lastly, I contribute to maintaining an organized library space by arranging books in a systematic order on the shelves.

I volunteer as a secondary school teacher in a refugee camp, instructing in English and Mathematics. Amidst the challenges of COVID-19, I extended my assistance to two primary schools, managing both in-person and online classes. Balancing 18 weekly classes honed my skills in teamwork, dedication, and compassion for students from diverse backgrounds. Discovering children from my own community without homes, I took the initiative to establish a nightly refuge for them within the camp, dedicating two hours every evening to education. Beyond teaching, I also ensured they received essential life necessities, such as a balanced diet. This ongoing project is my continued commitment to improving the lives and education of these vulnerable children.

I completed an online course in partnership with Cisco Academy and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The course focused on Introduction to Cyber Security, and I earned a certificate upon successful completion.
