• Treat a range of conditions affecting the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, jaws, and neck
• Analyze medical charts, perform surgeries of the oral and maxillofacial regions, and consult with other healthcare specialists as needed
• Inform patients of their diagnoses and discussing appropriate treatment options with them
• Administering local, regional, or general anesthetics to patients before surgeries.
• Take patient histories, conduct dental examinations and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings
• Remove diseased and impacted teeth; remove impacted, damaged and non-restorable teeth. Provide sophisticated, safe and effective anesthesia services including intravenous (IV) sedation and general anesthesia
• Perform oral surgical operations to remove infected, impacted or malposed teeth to prepare jaws for prosthodontic appliances and remove abnormal growths, cysts or foreign bodies from jaws and oral structures
• Supervise administration of general anesthetics. Prescribe preoperative/ postoperative care. Prepare diagnostic and treatment records
• Interpret & evaluate facial structures radiographs to determine nature/ extent of abnormalities & injuries of jaws.
• Help plan and place implants used to replace missing teeth in close collaboration with restorative dentists. Reconstruct bone in places needing bone for implant placement and modify gingival (gum) tissue surrounding implants when necessary to make teeth placed on implants look even more natural
• Update and use relevant knowledge by keeping up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge. Use dental and emergency medical treatment procedures along with research methodology procedures in health care and medical diagnostic techniques.
• Manage patients with benign and malignant cysts and tumors of the oral and facial regions. Treat severe infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws, and neck.
• Work in conjunction with an orthodontist to surgically reconstruct and realign the upper and lower jaws into proper dental and facial relationships to provide improved biting function and facial appearance.
• Plan and schedule case and assigns oral surgeons and technical assistants required to perform surgical treatment. Determine material and equipment requirements for operation of oral surgery service. Coordinate with other dental and medical services.
• Care for facial injuries by repairing routine and complex facial skin lacerations (cuts), setting fractured jaw and facial bones, reconnecting severed nerves and ducts, and treating other injuries.
• Manage patients with benign and malignant cysts and tumors of the oral and facial regions and treat severe infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws, and neck.
• Correct jaw, facial bone and facial soft tissue problems left as the result of previous trauma or removal of pathology.
• Perform surgery on the mouth and jaws in order to treat conditions such as cleft lip and palate and jaw growth problems, prepare the mouth for dental implants, and to aid in the regeneration of deficient bone and gum tissues.
• Provide emergency treatment of facial injuries including facial lacerations, intra-oral lacerations, and fractured facial bones and remove impacted, damaged, and non-restorable teeth.
• Remove tumors and other abnormal growths of the oral and facial regions, using surgical instruments. Restore form and function by moving skin, bone, nerves, and other tissues from other parts of the body in order to reconstruct the jaws and face.
• Perform minor cosmetic procedures such as chin and cheek-bone enhancements, and minor facial rejuvenation procedures.
• Maintain quality, safety, infection control standards & ethical standards for delivery of dental surgical care, diagnosis & treatment planning
