CHARGE NURSE/CIRCULATING NURSE

• Reports to OR to review and facilitate the preparation for the first patients for the day.
• Scheduling of elective, stat and direct surgeries.
• Coordinates with the surgeon and anesthesia team with regards to turn around of patient.
• Coordinates with unit staff regarding premedication and moving patients to the CV OR unit in a timely manner.
• Manages any cancellations, postponement or any changes in the OR list to concerned personnel

• Connects the patient to the monitor. Takes the pre-anesthesia baseline vital signs.
• Assists anesthetists in preparing and commencing intravenous infusions, IV cannulation and other central lines of patients and checks the patency of the IV lines, making sure its stability.
• Assists anesthetists in nasogastric tube insertion and other procedure as needed.
• Foley catheter insertion
• Positions the patient depending on the surgical procedure.
• Assists surgical team needs- assists the scrub nurse by providing and anticipating the needed things in the surgical field.
• Confirms the pre and post-operative sponge count with the scrub nurse and documents it. Informs surgeon of the count’s completeness or discrepancy.
• Collects blood samples and check blood sugar level, blood loss, intake and output of the patient.
• Acts as a look out for breaks in aseptic techniques - monitors and supervises the adherence to sterile technique by the surgical team and clinical observers.
• Assists blood transfusion of patients by anesthesiologists as per hospital policy and procedure.
• Administers medications intra operatively.
• Maintains all records and accurate documentation during surgery in the patients file.
• Informs the charge nurse when to call the succeeding patients in the operating lists.
