Research

  • Graduate Research Experience, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA, Hydrothermal synthesis of nano-pourous and micro-pourous materials and thin films. Structure elucidation utilizing PXRD, SEM, single x-ray diffraction (ShellX). Materials examined for applications in ion exchange and catalysis and pharmaceutical uptake. Characterization techniques also include: UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, optical microscopy, NMR, ICP-MS, TGA-MS, IC, HPLC.
  • Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA, Organic synthesis of starting material lead tyrosine and progress toward synthesis of β-lactam. Experience performing chemistry under inert atmospheric conditions. Develop skills working on a large scale and conducting research on a small scale. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
  • Research Education for Undergraduate, Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, CA, Examine surfactant mixtures and surface pressure utilizing a DeNouy ring tensiometer. Findings presented at an ACS national meeting, and regional meetings as a poster and talk. Research has led to a modification of Cal Poly’s physical chemistry lab. Resulted in publication: J. Chem. Educ., 2008, 85 (2), p 269.
  • Research Assistant, Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, CA, Assisted in the development of summer program and laboratory for the vision impaired. Helped devise instruments for tactile and auditory use. Facilitated experiment design for accessibility for those with vision impairment.
