Writing, reading

I wrote an opinion column for two national/international magazines, Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly. Not exactly The New Yorker, I realize, but I read that one, too. I had a large following and was never afraid to speak my mind; whether this is one of my best traits or one of my worst traits remains to be seen.

I edited two books for a friend and wrote  an essay in another friend's book about soap operas.

I love to read and always have. As a child, I climbed up in our mimosa tree to read. Now I mostly read books about medicine, especially the actual practice of medicine and medical education, as well as southern fiction. If you want to find me, I'm the one with her nose always stuck in a book.

I also was an administrator of a Facebook group called "Beneful by Purina Is Killing Dogs! for nine years. The original group name was "Is Beneful by Purina Killing Dogs?," and, sadly, the answer is YES. I studied dog food ingredients and everything about dog food for those nine years. I interpreted dogs' laboratory values from their vets' offices and tried to help their people take the best possible care of them.

I left because the person who started/owned the group, despite being a registered nurse and dietitian, was wholly into homeopathic medicine and would advise people to stop giving their pets the medications the vet had provided in favor of using homeopathic remedies, and that was something I couldn't sit back and watch, so we had serious differences of opinion. I don't like conflict, so I left the group, but I do miss it, helping people and their dogs.
