Ranch manager/Hunting Coordinator

  • When I was employed there, I was in charge of the whitetail breeding program with over 900 whitetail deer in the current deer breeding pens that include bucks & doe.
  • We do daily rounds checking for deer count, health, feed and water level and condition.
  • We medicate when needed.
  • Depending on time of year we walk pens checking on new born fawns.
  • Tag & tattoo & check health of new fawns.
  • Bottle raise if needed.
  • I do all darting of whitetails to medicate or when cutting off antlers off to sort out into breeding pens.
  • We also have a state of the are facility to run our deer through but I do it different.
  • I only use it for the doe an fawns sorting out or changing the breeding pen assignment.
  • Our bucks never run through the chute for many reasons an for employees and animal safety.
  • I'm also in charge of the exotic species in the breeding pens apart from the whitetail which include Markhor sheep, nubian ibex, transcaspian sheep, bongo, sititunga, nyala, dama gazelle, axis bucks and red stags.
  • With all different feeds and medications if sick depending on species.
  • I currently have 8 employees under me including our chef and our maintenance staff.
  • I also manage and over see all ranch projects.
  • I attend all SCI hunting shows through out the map from Las vegas to Michigan, Houston, Dallas, California and the TTHA shows in texas for whitetails.
  • We pick up 50% of our clients and new clients at these shows and to spread out exotic side of the ranch.
  • We always find whitetail hunters at shows.
  • I book all our hunts at the shows an deal with all the daily emails on new and past clients.
  • From the time the clients arrive at the ranch till the time they leave.
  • Once we have clients at the ranch I'm usually guiding most the clients.
  • On the days I dont have clients I run heavy equipment clearing brush or making new hunting spots, fixing roads or what ever is needed.
  • I have over 20 years of welding experience, 20 years of water repair PVC an most our pasture and pens set up uses inch 1/4 polly lines.
  • I have basic knowledge of carpentry but Not much carpenter work other than basic repairs.
  • Definitely not a home builder just repair man.
  • But living on and working on a ranch you never run out of things to do or work.
  • I'm not afraid to work or learn new things.
  • Even though I have 20 years of ranch hands on labor work you always come across new ideas or safer way of doing things the right way.
  • I believe in doing it once doing it right.

  • Breeding some of the biggest south texas genetic bucks/doe ranch has produced a few yearling in the 190 and a few 2 ½ over 220 this year we are shooting for main frame typical south texas monsters.
  • Last year we A.I a 24 doe and live breed 28 doe with some top stuff including super 727 doe, maxbo, buford, RB, tex mex, and many more!
  • We have 22 huge deer pens covering 120 acres of nothing but deer pens.
  • Full indoor facilities, vet room and 2 separate watch/sick rooms to monitor sick deer.
  • We feed every morning mix texture feed and mixed supplements to help maintain body weight for maximum antler growth on our bucks and our doe have a different mixture for better and healthier fawns during fawning season and antler growth season.
  • We walk pens 3 times a day right now looking for fawns to process and tag.
  • When i am not in the pens we also have 60 head of cattle to care for including feeding, worming, removing momma cows to wean and sort out heifers and calves tagging, put out hay, cake check water troughs, some will be taken and sold to auction.
  • Run and check fence lines and set out snares, fix and repair any damaged fence.
  • Indoors maintenance of lodge mop, sweep, wash make beds when hunters leave the ranch, mow and weed eat lodge yard, front gate, trim trees throughout headquarters, shred main road from gate to headquarters, maintain and maintenance of 4 ranch vehicles and 5 atv off road mules including tune ups, oil changes, light mechanic work.
  • Maintenance of 12 deer blinds, 14 1000lb corn feeders, 16 3000lb protein feeders.
  • During the hunting season keep track of hunters harvest log, score & record of every buck harvested, keep bucks & doe from deer pens up to date and on file.
  • Deliver bucks and doe that are sold and bought.
  • Monitor new ranch lodge & up grades that are in process, picking up building materials for new lodge and deliver to contractor on site, currently finishing up protein pens on the new ranch and cattle pens with loading chute plus many more projects going on & regular ranch maintenance.

  • Full time during hunting season as dove, deer and exotics guide, daily deer pen routine check and fill water daily, fill corn and protein feeders as needed.
  • Medicate fawns if needed, transport deer to new ranch if sold.
  • Sort out buck fawns and doe fawns during fawning season, sort out deer thru facilities chut tagging new deer or new fawns around september, sort out A.I doe to pen an live breed doe on separate pen, checking fence lines, observe deer in pens daily for health, sickness, recognize the way of movement and body language if visual illness is not presented.
  • Run deer through chute to medicate, tag, remove antlers, if sick will dart medicate/evaluate and or inspect for better view.
  • Might have to be removed from pen/hurt to indoor facilities.
  • There is just a lot of work when working any deer pen operations to list.. but i have been around it all.
  • Other basic ranch duties mowing and keeping lodge clean and ready for groups back to back.
  • Clean deer blinds, check batteries in feeders after each hunt.
  • Clean trucks before hunters arrive, have them sign in, give a small introduction about the ranch and hunting ranch rules, hours of hunting, time of any meals provided in the package hunt.
  • Clean game animals, cape if requested by the hunter.
  • While hunters come in from the hunt on free time make a quick run by deer pens and observe.
  • Many other things were done an especially before hunting season, moving blinds, shredding, clear land if needed, plant food plots, set up game cameras, clean, fill and test all feeders.
  • Fix any needing repairs, or replacement.

  • Clean game deer, hogs, dove, quail, check trail cameras make Cd's of pictures of mature, culls, which deer are old enough to harvest and deer that are too young to harvest.
  • Guide hunters and guest during the season.
  • Sign in hunters, sight in firearms at the gun range to make sure scope is still on target.
  • Cut fire wood, Light mechanic on ranch trucks and ATVs, keep yard mowed, plant, trim, water.
  • Welding repairs, build feeders, hog traps, heavy equipment repairs welding on disk, blades, anything metal I can repair if the part is still able to be fixed.

  • Company Overview: Ranch was leased from a company from San Antonio Tx, "Zachary Construction"
  • I was hired to help with the wildlife dept. which included cleaning out deer blinds in the off season 67 5x9 Atascosa corp. blinds.
  • Fill 70 corn feeders and 75 3,000lbs protein feeders year round.
  • Also used heavy equipment D7, D6, D5, tractor shredder, backhoe, light use of maintainer.
  • I would use D7 to clear land for food plots, drag wide track, new roads.
  • Shred all main roads pretty much whole ranch before deer season, blow out radiator an air filter after every use, grease, check oil, fill diesel every time before use.
  • We also had 7 ranch trucks that I would keep up with clean before every hunt inside and out, did all the mechanic work, tune ups, brakes, change oil, wipers, u joints, leaf springs, anything external.
  • Same for the ranch 4wheelers, Did all the ranch welding repairs, gates, dozers, blades, plows, cattle guards, made a few hog traps, built a metal shed, gun room out of a container.
  • During the deer season guide hunters, sit and scout, clean game, cape out game if requested, fly game survey the ranch would take 5 days to fly @ 100 yard transactions, count deer mature was bucks 5 ½ an older, immature was 1 ½ to 4 ½ yrs old, an fawns, and Doe.
  • Also counted cubbies of quail, hogs, coyotes, bobcats.
  • During the season also helped the ranch cook clean lodge, mop, sweep, vacuum, dust, clean restrooms, make beds wash laundry, help cook outdoor steaks, fajitas, quail, dove.
  • Most cooking was indoors twice a week outdoor cook.
  • Before hunting hunters would fire rifle at the gun range, watch safety video, sign in guest book, all guns were kept in storage container/gun room, no guns were allowed in lodge or bed rooms, while in trucks guns were not loaded an open bolt is the ranch policy.
  • No liquor was allowed while hunting.
  • Pretty much whatever the ranch needed I would make sure it would get done!
  • Ranch was leased from a company from San Antonio Tx, "Zachary Construction"
  • Reason for leaving the ranch lost their lease after 30 yrs once the owner past away and family took over the ranch split the ranch and could not come up with a fair long term lease so Zachary let it go.
