Marcos Rangel

Brazilian conductor Marcos Rangel is a doctoral student in orchestral conducting at the University of Houston. He previously was an assistant conductor at Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia (NEOJIBA), a program similar to El Sistema in Brazil, where he prepared the orchestra for their 2022 international tour that included the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Philharmonie in Paris with pianist Maria João Pires and the 2023 national tour through the Northeast and North of Brazil with violinist Midori. The Los Angeles International Conductors Competition in Argentina named him a finalist and placed fourth out of forty competitors in 2024. Marcos has worked with influential conductors like Harold Farberman at the Bard College Conservatory of Music and Laurent Gay at the Haute École de Musique de Genève. In Brazil, his conducting studies included Ricardo Rocha, Ligia Amadio, André Cardoso, Isaac Karabtchevsky, and Abel Rocha. As an educator, Marcos has worked many years with musicians of various levels and backgrounds, encouraged collective music experiences, and promoted Brazilian symphonic music. He holds a master's degree in music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro-Brazil and currently studies with Franz Anton Krager at the University of Houston.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND 

● 2025: Conductor of the Moores School Chamber Orchestra in partnership with the University of Houston Composition Studio 

● 2024: Conductor in the Conductor at the Moores School of Music Season Opening at the University of Houston

● 2024: The Los Angeles International Conductors Competition in Argentina named him a finalist and placed fourth out of forty competitors

● 2023: Conductor on the Brazilian tour of the NEOJIBA program in the Northeast and North of the country, having the opportunity to perform with young Brazilian soloists and as assistant to violinist Midori; 

● 2022: Assistant conductor on the international tour of the NEOJIBA program, having performed in countries such as France, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark and Italy and with soloists such as Maria João Pires and Ricardo Castro; 

● 2015 to 2024: NEOJIBA Program - State Centers for Youth and Children Orchestras of Bahia. He has already acted as coordinator of the Nucleus of Musical Practice of Trancoso - BA and conductor of the String Orchestra of Trancoso - BA. Principal conductor of the Castro Alves Orchestra, the program's second main formation, for 4 years. He currently serves as conductor - coordinator, participating in the general musical program of the 13 nucleo of NEOJIBA in addition to being the assistant conductor of the main formation of the program, the 2 de Julho Orchestra. ● 2019: Teacher of Orchestral Practice at Domingos Martins Festival - ES. 

● 2018: Guest conductor of the King School of Music in the USA to form the Regional Orchestra of El Sistema USA.

● 2017: Conductor of the Children's Orchestra of State of Bahia within the celebrations of the 10 years of the NEOJIBA program. Responsible for preparing 100 children and teenagers between 8 and 15 years old from all over the state of Bahia, involving more than 30 cities, preparing for 15 days, repertoire for 4 concerts in the celebrations of the program. 

● 2014: Guest conductor of the Acarigua-Araure Orchestra, of the El Sistema de Venezuela Nucleus in the city. 

● 2010 to 2014: Worked as a teacher of Orchestral Conducting, Harmony and Analysis at the Cultural Center of Music in Campos - RJ. He coordinated the institution's technical course. 

● 2010 to 2014: Assistant conductor of the Mariuccia Iacovino Orchestra, in Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ 

● 2012: Assistant conductor and executive coordinator of the Municipal Orchestra of Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ. The Mariuccia Iacovino and The Municipal Campos Orchestras are linked to the Orchestrating Lives project, considered the first Project inspired by El Sistema Venezolano, in Brazil. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES 

● 2018: Haute École de Musique de Genève (Geneva Higher School of Music), class by Professor Laurent Gay. He worked on techniques and varied repertoire. 

● 2018: Masterclass with Brazilian conductor Ligia Amadio, principal conductor of the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra. He worked on techniques and varied repertoire. 

● 2017: Participation as guest conductor of concert of the Bahia Symphony Orchestra 

● 2015: Student participating in the 1st Orchestral Conducting Workshop of the Santo André Orchestra - SP. At the end of the event, he was chosen to conduct the Santo André Symphony Orchestra at the closing concert. 

● 2012 and 2013: Conductor of several concerts by the Orchestra of the School of Music at UFRJ. Activities carried out during the period as a master's student. 

● 2011: Student participating in the class of conductor Isaac Karabtchevsky, at MIMO (International Music Exhibition of Olinda - PE). He performed in front of the Barra Mansa Symphony Orchestra during the activities offered by MIMO. 

● 2010: Conducting course at Bard College Conservatory of music, Annandale-on-Hudson - NY - USA. He obtained classes with internationally renowned conductors such as: Harold Farberman, Lawrence Golan, Eduardo Navega, Leon Botstein, Raymond Harvey, Apo Hsu. For a month residing at the university, he had classes before the orchestra every day, developing a vast repertoire during this period. 

● 2009, 2010 and 2011: Active student of the Orchestral Conducting Class of the Oficina de Música de Curitiba with Portuguese conductor Osvaldo Ferreira, Artistic Director of Orquesta Filarmónica Portuguesa and Sociedade de Concertos de Brasília. 

● 2009: Masterclass with the Portuguese conductor Osvaldo Ferreira promoted by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro. 

● 2007: Masterclass with the orchestra director Kurt Masur promoted by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro. 

● 2006 and 2007: Courses in Caracas - VENEZUELA, through the Orquestas Juveniles y Infantiles de la Venezuela System (FESNOJIV) receiving classes with conductor Angelino Monroy. 

● 2005 and 2006: Active student at the Campos Winter Music Festival in Rio de Janeiro (FEMUSICA) studying under the direction of maestro Ricardo Rocha. He was responsible for conducting the Academic Orchestras of the Festival in 2005 and 2006 in the closing concerts.
