Summary

Ms. Kowroski was a renowned and beloved Principal Ballerina with New York City Ballet for 26 years. She retired from NYCB on October 17, 2021 and became the Acting Artistic Director of New Jersey Ballet in November 2021. Following the success of her first season as Acting Artistic Director she became the Ad of New Jersey Ballet in 2022. Transforming New Jersey Ballet with new branding, exciting repertory, recruiting new talent, Maria has put this company on the map. Since her dynamic leadership New Jersey Ballet has become the resident ballet company at the Mayo Performing Arts Center guaranteeing the company performances throughout the year. Under her leadership Ms. Kowroski has restaged many of the company's existing classics including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote. She conceptionalized a children's ballet titled Once Upon a Time to introduce ballet to young people and get them excited about the arts. With an extremely limited budget New Jersey Ballet has been fortunate to acquire ballets by the following choreographers George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Justin Peck and Christoper Wheeldon. For the first time in New Jersey Ballet history the company has had 3 years of sold out Nutcracker performances and attendance for all of our repertory performances has significantly increased.

After a successful return to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in the spring of 2024 Maria was nominated by Dance Europe for Director of the Year.

Under Ms. Kowroski's leadership New Jersey Ballet has thrived and is the leading ballet company in the state leading to several new performance venues throughout the state of New Jersey, invitation to be a part of Works and Process at the Guggenheim and exploring theaters to hos the company in NYC. Since Maria's appointment to AD the company has selected a new chairman of the board and attracted several new board members and patrons.
