  • Worked as a Community Worker my position is Social Science/Humanities Research Assistant III in a Diabetes Prevention Office here in Starr Co. my employer is at University of Austin School of Nursing. We are currently working in a NIH-funded research project titled "Diabetes Prevention Culturally Tailored for Mexican Americans." My job duties are to contact participants by phone that come to our satellite office in Rio Grande City. Also, my duties require the use of computer skills we have to email our Director Dr. Sharon Brown at University in Austin to send time sheets for employees, do on the job training modules, send employee information, keep track of nutritional classes data and scan information to her. Assist with University of Houston duties as well, which are to set up appointments for the participants that are a part of a three-year project. The project consists of 3 annually exams which include the collection of their microbiome, saliva, nasal and blood work and these duties require documentation and data collection. Before each exam the people are weighed and measured. All participants' information is scanned and then saved to the computer. In addition, we interview each participant to obtain their health and nutritional cultural backgrounds information. Moreover, we do home visits as well to reach out to our participants that have very busy schedules which involves documenting and record keeping. Other duties that I perform in the office are doing ECG (electrocardiograms) and HRV (Heart Rate Variability) I have even worked on PWV and PWA exams (pulse wave velocity and pulse wave analysis). I also assist in the lab processing blood and the stool collection manifests.
