Memorial Senior High School Varsity Water Polo Three Year Varsity Starter (9-11) As a multi-sport athlete growing up, I had never played water polo (nor swam competitively) but wanted to challenge myself by trying something new. In order to prepare for high school level competition, I joined a practice club team and soon found that I both enjoyed the sport and I excelled in it. I have been a three-year starter on the varsity team; I am a vocal teammate and I try to mentor the younger players. During my sophomore season, we were the first-ever District Champs and during my junior season we advanced beyond that to the Regional competition. My participation in water polo has improved my teamwork and communication skills and has expanded my ability to quickly and strategically solve problems. I attend daily practices Monday-Saturday with time spent both in school working on form and improving times and time spent outside the water building strength and endurance. My participation in swimming has taught me discipline and time-management skills; further, as a very physically and mentally intense sport, I have developed great perseverance as a person and swimmer. I have qualified for the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (TISCA) Lone Star Classic for two consecutive years. My team has won the JV District Championship each year (9-11). My relay won first place in the JV Districts 400 relay sophomore year. YoungLife Member YoungLife weekly gatherings provide high school students an opportunity for fellowship and sharing of faith. We gather weekly at a member’s home for dinner, music, games, and a Bible study. I enjoy the opportunity to connect with my peers during this special time each week and I love listening to the life experiences of the speakers. Further, I’ve really connected with one of the YoungLife leaders and I consider her to be a mentor.
