  • Ensures that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all incoming samples, instruments and chemical methodologies used in analyses are following the standards of the Good Laboratory Practices Act.
  • Provides high level analytical chemistry services and data analysis for organic, inorganic, and other emerging contaminants of concern analyses (e.g., personal care products, hormones, neonicotinoids) to Primary Investigators.
  • Serves on analytical workgroups which evaluate new instruments including those which may automate methods currently performed manually, to maintain cutting edge technology for the Service.
  • Advisor to sample submitters in areas of environmental sample collection, data interpretation, and analytical requests needed to restore, remediate and/or evaluate habitat and/or species.
  • Provides raw data, data summaries, and reports to help inform Primary Investigators (FWS, USGS, NPS) of contaminant issues of concern.
  • Respond to inquiries about sample sizes, detection limits, turnaround times and QA/QC requirements.
  • Assists the field Primary Investigator and contract laboratories to test and validate contract laboratory results such that the precision and accuracy of the data is verified, repeatable, and capable of withstanding scrutiny in court.
  • Ensures that valid, up-to-date methods and state-of-the-art instrumentation are used for laboratory comparisons to verify contract labs are performing within expected Excellency levels.
  • Performs routine maintenance on instruments used in the preparation of performance test samples.
  • Works daily with the Primary QC officer in developing and refining a QA protocol for Contaminant sampling, laboratory standards, data analysis and data reporting.
  • Serves on the QA/QC Team to review procedures for consistent and reproducible results.
  • Provides delivery orders to analytical labs and authorization to ship orders to Fish and Wildlife Service sample submitters.
  • Manages all financial aspects of catalog needs for the Service. Creates itemized pricing sheets detailing analytical requests and submits information to the budget staff to ensure purchase orders and acquisition requests are developed and issued in a timely manner.
  • Reviews purchase orders and acquisition requests to ensure all aspects are correct relative to the catalog and the analytical request.
  • Assists with the preparation of proficiency check samples and homogenize and spike soil, sediment, tissue, vegetation and water samples with known chemical concentrations for ongoing evaluation and monitoring of each contracted lab.
  • Consolidates the laboratory data, and performs analytical calculations (e.g., Grubbs Outlier Test) for the preparation analytical reports.
  • Interprets and evaluates all testing results to determine their chemical significance, to ensure that all the information requested has been determined, and that all results are valid.
  • Works with the Database Manager in the processing of results and the creation of final data reports of Electronic Data Deliverables (EDDs) using the Environmental Contaminants Database.
  • Assists Database Manager with data and records management for to ensure results are available, when appropriate, for external release via the contaminants mapper.
