Work History

Las Vegas Sports Reporter

Associated Press
10.2022 - Current
  • Cover Las Vegas' teams and major events with special emphasis on the Raiders.
  • In just three years, have covered the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Final, WNBA Finals and NCAA basketball regional.
  • Have established early relationships with the Athletics, giving me an advantage over my competition. I worked on stories in Sacramento that included the effects on three cities of their planned move to Las Vegas and the promising young talent that could make the A's winners when they arrive in 2028.
  • Managed coverage of Salt Lake City-area teams because AP does not have a full-time reporter there. That included working on a package of stories last year on the new NHL team that moved from Arizona.
  • Adept at writing breaking news, features and enterprise stories, including the NFL's embrace of Las Vegas after shunning the city for many years, the Raiders' continued popularity in Southern California and the controversial emergence of slap fighting.
  • Meet AP's standards of filing game stories within five minutes of completion. Also provide analysis that goes beyond the scores and statistics.
  • Collaborate regularly with other AP reporters to enhance coverage, be it working together on breaking news or an enterprise package.
  • Have outstanding and regular communication with my editors, particularly my direct supervisor in Phoenix.
  • Experience includes video, both appearing on screen and taking it of athletes and coaches.
  • Have more recently begun to incorporate AI into my reporting while double checking that the information is accurate and meets AP standards.
  • As AP has evolved into more of a digital platform, my focus is on quickly getting stories online.

Sports Reporter

  • Was the Review-Journal’s point person for 2021 Olympics coverage of Las Vegas-area athletes.
  • Produced an enterprise project every month or two, including pieces on NIL, how sports leagues and teams try to connect with Generation Z and how Las Vegas’ pursuit of the Montreal Expos in 2004 helped pave the way for the city to attract major sports.
  • An interview with then-Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff in August 2021 made national news because he opened the way for potential expansion.
  • Beat national media in September 2021 that BYU and Notre Dame agreed to play a football game in 2022 in Las Vegas.
  • Covered UNLV athletics for 20 years. Was the football beat writer for 19 seasons and the men’s basketball beat writer for 4½ years.
  • President of the 1,300-member FWAA in 2016. Also chaired a committee to create better working relationships between the media and Mountain West football coaches.
  • Four top-10 APSE finishes for newspapers with a circulation of 100,000 to 250,000, for News Story, Breaking News and Game Story.
  • Served on the Review-Journal’s Diverse Sourcing Committee. Was nominated by our sports editor to represent the department.
  • Regularly broke stories on the UNLV beat, including in late 2019 the hiring of Marcus Arroyo as its football coach.
