  • Prepares chemical and bacteriological media, reagents, and test solutions routinely used in the laboratory.
  • Performs chemical and bacteriological analyses of samples collected and calculates results. Performs testing as described in laboratory Quality Manual, following Standard Operating Procedures with adherence to requirements of NELAC accreditation.
  • Performs proficiency tests required for laboratory accreditation.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of tests, maintenance records, and equipment checks.
  • Prepares microbiological reports and takes the lead in receiving and performing projects coming to the laboratory.
  • Cleans glassware, laboratory, and equipment according to testing requirements.
  • Calibrates, repairs, and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Inventories supplies and equipment for laboratory.
  • Ensures that appropriate corrective actions are taken based on quality indicators from the analyses conducted.
  • Performs data entry into the laboratory information management system.
  • Communicates regularly with the Chief Chemist-QA/QC Officer on technical issues or problems.
  • Trains Laboratory Technicians on analytical procedures and laboratory practices and provides input on their performance.
  • Coordinates with vendors/contract laboratories to complete required sample analyses.
  • Places orders, purchases, and maintains the laboratory and ensures an adequate stock of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, charts, data sheets, chain-of-custody forms, test result reports, quality assurance reports, or other documents.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other divisions, other departments, the public, outside laboratories, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Assists Chief Chemist with laboratory audits and other functions to maintain NELAC certification.
  • Collects water and wastewater samples as required.
  • Effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Establishes and maintains effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.
