In collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI), treating physician and other members of the healthcare team, applies the nursing process and expert knowledge of treatment modalities and the clinical research process to the care of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.
Uses evidence based practice to provide and facilitate holistic care to clinical trial participants and their families.
Assists the PI and other members of the research regulatory team with protocol activation and review processes.
Supports the recruitment and registration of clinical trial participants, including facilitating the physician-led informed consent process and the coordination of screening assessments; Collaborates with Institute providers and members of outside healthcare organizations to obtain relevant historical patient records to ensure eligibility.
Prepares and presents trial protocol in-service trainings to other members of the healthcare team and serves as a primary resource for ongoing trial needs and education.
Insures the ordering and collection of labs and other protocol-required clinical assessments; Monitors subsequent results to assure patient safety and protocol compliance. Documents and reports therapy-related adverse effects as required.
Provides patients and their families comprehensive protocol teaching, including the trial schedule, at-home dosing instructions if applicable, and adverse effect management/considerations.
Participates in departmental and Institute-wide committees, including a task force aiming to reduce documentation burden and increase nursing time spent providing direct patient care.
Elected to two-year Chair of Research Nurse Practice Committee position by Institute-wide nursing peers; during term, proposed and successfully implemented restructuring of committee membership in order to increase engagement amongst nursing staff; planned agendas for and led subcommittee task forces charged with addressing various issues related to nursing practice.

Completed a comprehensive clinical research nurse training program for newly licensed registered nurses that included 240+ hour rotations in ambulatory infusion, inpatient hematology-oncology and research nursing roles in the multiple myeloma, gynecologic and neuro-oncology disease centers.
Successfully completed education activities, including Oncology Nursing Society coursework in chemotherapy, biotherapy and hematological cancers and the National Cancer Institute's program in chemotherapy essentials.
