Research topic: New York Slavery Records Index

The New York Slavery Records Index is a searchable compilation of records that identify individual enslaved persons and their owners, beginning as early as 1525 and ending during the Civil War. Our data come from census records, slave trade transactions, cemetery records, birth certifications, manumissions, ship inventories, newspaper accounts, private narratives, legal documents and many other sources. The index contains over 35,000 records. The index includes census records, slave trade transactions, cemetery records, birth certifications, manumissions, ship inventories, newspaper accounts, private narratives, legal documents.

My task included to conduct a survey of towns and cities that existed in 1800 to identify additional slave registration records. To identify the status of the registration and abandonment records that were filed with the Clerks based on the Gradual Abolition law of 1799. And to conduct research on John Jay‘s Slave, Abigail.
