San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco — Research Assistant I SEPTEMBER 2020 - MARCH 2021 

Cannabis and Health Evidence Review: The Effects of Cannabis on Overdose and Mortality among Patients on Chronic Opioid Therapy

This study focused on examining the association of cannabis use on the outcome of all cause mortality and secondary outcomes of hospitalization among veterans over 65 years old in collaboration with the National Institute of Health (NIH), SFVA, and UCSF School of Medicine.

  • Evaluated eligibility status via medical record review for potential participants.
  • Conducted participant substance use and health record interviews and follow-ups.
  • Performed internal data review and data double-checks.
  • Organized individual project reviews among fellow research assistants.
  • Assessed participant mental health risk and de-escalated mental health crisis as well as provided referrals to health and crisis lines as necessary.

Individualizing Incentives for Alcohol in the Severely Mentally Ill

This study focused on contingency management to treat heavy drinking in people with severe mental illness and is in collaboration with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA).

  • Recruited and corresponding with present and future participants. Performed participant daily, weekly, and monthly interviews. Conducted internal data reviews and data double-checks.
  • Tracked study funds.
  • Compiled and recorded drug and alcohol biomarker data.
  • Operated the Indiko Clinical and Specialty Chemistry system to obtain EtG measurements.
  • Conducted literature reviews for past and present findings related to substance abuse and rewards-based motivation.

This research conducted was part of a dissertation focused on cognitive research in infants with and without autism
