Pre-Admission Testing Nurse Responsibilities
1. Patient Assessment & Screening
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments for surgical or procedural patients.
- Review patients' medical, surgical, and medication histories.
- Identify potential anesthesia risks, allergies, and chronic conditions.
- Ensure necessary clearances (e.g., cardiology, pulmonology) are in place.
2. Diagnostic Testing & Review
- Order or review required pre-op labs, EKGs, chest X-rays, and COVID tests as per protocols.
- Evaluate test results and flag abnormal findings for provider review.
- Ensure all test results are received and documented before the procedure.
3. Patient Education & Instructions
- Provide clear pre-operative instructions (e.g., fasting, medication adjustments, arrival times).
- Educate patients on what to expect before, during, and after their procedure.
- Review instructions related to hygiene (e.g., CHG wash), transportation, and recovery needs.
4. Medication Reconciliation
- Perform thorough medication reconciliation, including OTC and herbal supplements.
- Clarify which medications should be held or continued before surgery.
- Communicate with prescribers as needed for adjustments or clarifications.
5. Communication & Coordination
- Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and the surgical scheduling team.
- Notify providers of any abnormal findings, risks, or required follow-ups.
- Ensure the surgical team has all necessary information for day-of-procedure safety.
6. Documentation
- Accurately document all findings, education, and communications in the patient’s medical record.
- Ensure compliance with institutional protocols and accreditation standards.
7. Patient Advocacy & Support
- Address patient questions, fears, or concerns with compassion and clarity.
- Act as a liaison between the patient and the care team to ensure a safe surgical experience
