Dr. Tim Johnson at Southern Eye Clinic (6 hours):
I shadowed Dr. Johnson, an ophthalmologist in Tuscaloosa. While Shadowing I witnessed many procedures such as a cataract evaluations, general eye exams, and YAG laser. One patient experience that stood out to me was a lady who had schizophrenia and needed a YAG laser performed. This procedure is simple and painless, but the patient was very scared to the point of tears. Dr. Johnson calmly told her everything was going to be perfectly fine. As he performed the procedure he kept reassuring her that she was doing great and that it was going to ba alright. I aspire to be like Dr. Johnson, because he was skilled and made the patient feel comfortable in an unfamiliar situation.
Dr. Riley Austin at Northport Vision LLC (4 hours):
I shadowed Dr. Austin, and optometrist whose office is in the Tuscaloosa Walmart. I saw him perform general eye exams, post surgery follow ups ,and visual field testing. Dr. Austin had a small but efficient office. He saw many patients and clearly communicated options and solutions with the patients. One day I want to have the knowledge to allow me to communicate to patients as well as Dr. Austin.
Dr. John Mason and Dr. Tim Johnson (3 hours):
I shadowed these two ophthalmologist and got to whiteness them perform cataract surgeries (Dr. Johnson) and Retina surgeries (Dr. Mason) on the same patients right after one another. Dr. Johnson showed that he is very experienced cataract surgeon and performed efficient and precise surgeries. Dr. Mason proved that he is outstanding under imperfect conditions. One patient kept moving during a epiretinal membrane peal and Dr. Mason coerced him to remain still while he completed the procedure. I aspire to be as caring for my patients as these two surgeons were for their patients.
