I began playing the guitar at the age of 12, which has birthed a passion for music and culture. For almost 5 years I've studied a wide pallet of music ranging from renaissance and baroque music to death metal and Madonna. I believe that music is an expression of culture, and if we wish to understand the human experience, we must celebrate the various musical traditions around the world. This fall, I will be an incoming freshman at Oakland University studying music education. Public schools are the only institution we have that can provide equitable access to all people regardless of their economic status, I wish to play a role in that teaching what I care most about.
In my junior year of high school, I played electric guitar for my schools production of High School Music. While this was not necessarily a job, as I was playing for the school I attended as an extra curricular activity- this was my first experience as a pit musician and was crucial for me learning to sight read music and play guitar in an ensemble setting.
As a senior in high school I was hired by Capac High School to play guitar for their production of Little Shop of Horrors. This was a wonderful time for me to utilize my skills to help out a nearby school and develop some professionality with music.
For the summer after graduating high school, I worked as a camp counselor. I led groups of children from ages 4-15 of various different interests, developmental levels, and skills. I used the core teaching practices I learned through my teacher cadet class in high school to lead activities ranging from drum circles, birdwatching, archery, and more. I learned basic first aid as a way to keep my campers safe- this included being trained to react to allergic reactions and seizures. I learned how to efficiently communicate with parents to give information regarding a child's behavior and growth along with receiving feedback to handle various quirks a child may provide.
