My vision for local 18 membership. I believe a stronger emphasis should be put on reaching out and communicating with high school career fairs, guidance counselors, and the technical education teachers. I can't speak for all areas of the state, but do know the schools that my children go too. Have very little knowledge of what a Sheet Metal Worker does and what a union represents. they should be educated at a young age so they are informed before making career decisions. I myself along with many people I known didn't find out about the Sheet Metal Workers or Local 18 until many years after I graduated high school and had tried anther occupation first. There should also be a concentration on non high school aged workers. They would need to know their options and benefits of changing careers. how a sheet metal career compares to their current job. Non union tradesman should be contacted to explain. So they have a complete understanding of the unions operation and benefits. I myself would probably not do this job in a nonunion setting. Last but not least are existing members. they should br contacted or visited periodically to make sure they understand the constitution and employers are not taking advantage of them.
