Wilmington College
Wilmington, OH

  • Agricultural runoff and pollution can negatively impact waterways. Chemical and bacterial testing offer a snapshot of stream quality, which is important during rapid changes in water conditions. Biological monitoring of macroinvertebrate diversity provides additional information about longer-term stream health. This study aims to utilize chemical and biological assessments of waterways to determine the most effective buffer crop to plant at field edges after harvest. Water quality will be evaluated upstream and downstream of six mono-crop fields in Clinton County, OH, before and after buffer crop planting. Water quality will continue to be monitored to determine the impact of each buffer crop on the long-term quality of stream health, and to optimize stream mitigation from agricultural runoff.
