I am a hardworking 25 year old with a family oriented mindset. I got into the "Steel Mill" industry young and have learned a lot. Im excited to continue on my journey learning, working safely, and making new friends throughout my career.
I am currently working as a Millwright Apprentice in a new build car plant. We are installing Cranes in the warehouse while also watching and being observant of all other trades working around us. We use Type A Class 3 Scissor Lifts and Type B Class 3 Boom Lifts daily. We use a variety of hand tools such as Wrenches, Torque Wrenches, Impacts, Come alongs, Chainfalls, Plumb bobs, and many more.
During my time working for Special Metals I worked in the "Refinery" department and the Vacuum Melt department. In the "Refinery" I was tasked with dumping the slag pots using the Front end Loader, then separating the skulls from the slag and giving them an identification tag. I also helped with the casting side of this job. They use a top pour style cast so it has to be setup using clay tiles on a pad, then have molds and bases set on top of that, while working diligently and safely with the group of peers you are paired with. These change with the instructions of the customer which requires the use and knowledge to understand the paperwork.
In the Vacuum Induction Melt department I would setup the molds in different sizes to instruction so they can be casted to different size which is also covered with using paperwork and working well with many other people around you.
I worked in multiple departments and ran many overhead cranes. I ran the stock crane that built charges to load into the Electric Arc Furnace to reach the maximum capacity for efficiency. I also worked as a groundman creating minor alloy additions to fine tune the chemistry both by hand shoveling directly into the slag door of the furnace and by scooping and weighing specific numerical amounts of alloys and putting it into the hopper before dropping directly into the ladle as we tapped the heat.
I have also spent some time on the Casting side of the "Meltshop" where i was a Ladleman. As a Ladleman the responsibilities I was tasked with consisted of changing out the old ladle with the new ladle in a timely manner to keep the Tundish full so the caster would continue to run, help the Caster operators in any way needed, keep stock on all items used during casting, keep watch and help when a Strand would have a "Break out", and keeping a constant check on the temperature using a temperature pole with a thermo couple.
