In my experience at the University of Nebraska Kearney as a Boiler/Chiller operator, the skills I obtained were learning the in's and out's of how a boiler system works and operates. I also performed routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on them which consisted of boiler shutdown and startup, lock out tag out process, taking apart the boiler to clean the tubes, and reassembling the boiler for normal operations. I developed an understanding of how basic HVAC systems work and worked closely with the maintenance techs in servicing pumps and steam systems. As part of my everyday work at UNK, we pulled samples and ran tests on all the closed loop systems and cooling towing systems to make sure that the chemistry of the water met the right standards according to its specific demands.
•Learn all areas of the ethanol process including: cook, distillation, evaporation, dryers, thermo oxidizer, centrifuges, grain system, and water treatment.
•Learn and operate DCS (computer control system) for the plant.
•Collect samples and do the necessary tests to ensure consistent and quality product and record results.
•Monitor and make adjustments on the (DCS) computer according to the results of the samples and to keep within parameters and record changes.
•Work closely with maintenance and inform them of any mechanical problems.
•Communicate with the Laboratory and learn testing procedures including but not limited to yeast counts, microwave analyzer, HPLC, and the GC.
This was my summer job before transitioning into the United States Air Force. My responsibilities were to maintain landscape and grounds of Aurora NE cemetery. In this job I learned how to operate heavy machinery including skid steers, back hoes, and industrial size mowers.
