Work History

Principal Mechanical Engineer

Analytical Instruments Group, Emerson
Shakopee, MN
2021 - Current

Provide technical direction, expertise, and leadership and collaborate with international multidisciplinary teams in the design and development of industrial sensors and analytical devices. Proactively assess risks to design, quality, schedule, and cost and develop mitigation strategies to meet project goals. Effectively communicate and lead regular reviews with senior management regarding technical risks, design status, schedule and cost impact of design decisions. Introduce new and innovative technologies to solve difficult design challenges. Utilize advanced knowledge of plastic injection molding and act as design liaison with molding vendors and collaborate to solve design challenges of new molded parts. Supervise, guide, and mentor junior engineers.

  • Technical project lead of next generation new product development (NPD) platform and mechanical design owner of multiple new digital pH/ORP sensors
  • Drive progress, action, and deliverables through weekly team meetings, and technical peer reviews of test results and design changes.
  • Maintain forward momentum on multiple simultaneous NPD projects by prioritizing and delegating actions.
  • Iterate quickly through design changes and cycles of learning by prototyping using 3D printing, machining, and rapid injection molding.
  • Ensure quality is built into new products through use of risk analysis tools (DFMEA, PFMEA)
  • Prepare and present technical design proposals, peer reviews, root cause failure analysis findings, and project status updates
  • Collaborate with marketing, quality, manufacturing, and cross-functional design teams to develop product technical requirements.
  • Develop new test protocols and evaluation criteria for comparing new products and legacy sensors
  • Conduct design verification testing on final designs, assessing sensor performance, mechanical robustness, and ingress protection.
  • Lead efforts in driving manufacturing readiness and fostering international team collaboration through frequent visits to the production facility in Mexico.
  • Manage team through various significant design changes, successfully analyzing root causes for failures in prototype testing, while clearly conveying potential risks and impacts on quality, schedule, and cost to senior management.
  • Design multiple new injection molded parts in CREO using GD&T, work with vendors to update tools, qualify machining features, and evaluate DFM.
  • Design parts for and qualified process of new ultrasonic welding design.
  • As part of the Mechanical Engineering Management Team, interview candidates for open positions, make decisions regarding staffing levels and needs, project priorities, and departmental budgets.
  • Supervise, manage, and provide direction to team members including younger engineers and drafting technicians.
  • Serve as technical expert in Analytical Group and within the larger Emerson organization.
  • Participate in the Emerson Technical Mentoring program as both a mentor and a mentee. Provide guidance and council to a younger engineer and enhance skills and abilities by being a mentee of a distinguished technologist.

Lead Senior Engineer

Wireless Product Group, Emerson
Shakopee, MN
2014 - 2021
  • Led mechanical design and development of next generation Wireless Smart Antenna
  • Designed all mechanical parts and assemblies including injection molded polymers, cast and machined stainless steel, O-ring seals, and labels
  • Introduced spin welding technology to Rosemount, designed weld geometry to create a permanent seal for polymer enclosure, and conducted testing to determine optimal production weld settings.
  • Created testing procedures and conducted qualification testing on prototypes, production parts, and assemblies including leak testing, vibration, temperature cycling, impact, and other engineering tests
  • Created innovative solution for on-demand printing for dial faceplates on the Wireless Pressure Gauge
  • Invented algorithm for determining valid dial scales for any pressure range or unit which eliminated the need to maintain hundreds of static artwork files in production
  • Initiated use and led development of UV inkjet printing at Emerson to achieve design goals for accuracy and durability of the dial faceplate
  • Led engineering and integration efforts to incorporate acquired products into production with Emerson
  • Traveled to the UK to work with the team directly, was main design point of contact, and successfully launched several Wireless Corrosion Transmitters as production models with Emerson
  • Facilitated business systems and configuration management process integration into Emerson’s global business suite and PLMsoftware

General Engineer, Obscuration and Nonlethal Branch

Dept. of the Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Ctr
Rock Island, IL
2009 - 2014

Provided technical input for design improvement and sustaining for legacy non-lethal munitions for the US Army.

  • Led mechanical testing of legacy obscuration grenade to develop updated design requirements
  • Created procedures and specifications for design changes to chemical formulation of obscuration grenade
  • Tested riot control munitions at military testing facilities as part of root cause failure analysis
